What do you get when you cross Free Comic Book Day and Halloween?
Halloween ComicFest 2012! Yes, in case you haven’t noticed yet, this year Halloween falls on a Wednesday which means it belongs to comics fans across the nation! This means publishers are taking advantage of this opportunity by offering free comic books on Halloween day!
Anyone familiar with Free Comic Book Day (and considering that’s been going for over a decade, everyone should be familiar with it) knows how it works: local comic shops will have a selection of comic book available for free. Now, while you can simply walk in and grab one or two and go, you’re encouraged to look around the store, especially if you’ve never been there before, and perhaps buy something. Many stores will be holding events and sales as well, it’s a great chance to check out something new or, hopefully, fill in that gap in a run or two!
The books being offered, bother full sized and mini, range from all time classics to modern favorites. Most are all ages appropriate and all are worth checking out. There are a lot so stay tuned for more!
First up are the full-sized comics. There are only four, so be ready for a bigger column Wednesday when I share the mini-comics!
I will play favorites here and start with the book that surprised me because we haven’t seen something like this in a while. Also, it isn’t really a full sized comic but it’s bigger than the mini-comics:
JACK DAVIS’S TALES FROM THE CRYPT
- Just in time for Halloween, it’s a FREE all-ages flip-book comic reprinting classic BATMAN and SCOOBY-DOO tales!
- In his side of the comic, The Dark Knight meets Gotham City’s new vigilante, the Cavalier, and battles the evil of Ra’s Al Ghul in stories from BATMAN ADVENTURES #1 and #4.
- And in the other side, the Mystery Inc. Gang tries to get to the bottom of “The Costume Caper,” in a story from SCOOBY-DOO, WHERE ARE YOU? #2.

I'm SO picking up that free "Tales From the Crypt" issue from Fantagraphics!
The stories featured in this release are: Bats In My Belfry!, Lower Berth!, Mirror, Mirror, On The Wall!, and By The Fright Of The Silvery Moon! All are great stories but wait until you see the fantastic piece on the back cover!
I got the Marvel one to pass out to trick or treaters at the house. They will be getting a ComicBooked.com bookmark to go with it.
Fantagraphics told me on Twitter to check out the post tomorrow for even more free Halloween comic goodness from them!
