Candy Or Comics: Halloween ComicFest

Skott Jimenez 10/22/2012 Reviews

What do you get when you cross Free Comic Book Day and Halloween?

Halloween ComicFest 2012! Yes, in case you haven’t noticed yet, this year Halloween falls on a Wednesday which means it belongs to comics fans across the nation! This means publishers are taking advantage of this opportunity by offering free comic books on Halloween day!

Anyone familiar with Free Comic Book Day (and considering that’s been going for over a decade, everyone should be familiar with it) knows how it works: local comic shops will have a selection of comic book available for free. Now, while you can simply walk in and grab one or two and go, you’re encouraged to look around the store, especially if you’ve never been there before, and perhaps buy something. Many stores will be holding events and sales as well, it’s a great chance to check out something new or, hopefully, fill in that gap in a run or two!

The books being offered, bother full sized and mini, range from all time classics to modern favorites. Most are all ages appropriate and all are worth checking out. There are a lot so stay tuned for more!

First up are the full-sized comics. There are only four, so be ready for a bigger column Wednesday when I share the mini-comics!

I will play favorites here and start with the book that surprised me because we haven’t seen something like this in a while. Also, it isn’t really a full sized comic but it’s bigger than the mini-comics:

(W) Al Feldstein (A/CA) Jack Davis
Heh, heh! Got a real chiller-diller this time fiends! Join me, The Crypt-Keeper, your host of howls, along with Jack Davis and Al Feldstein as we creep our way through four spine-tingling, hair-standing, blood-curdling tales of terror from the vaults of EC Comics! We’ll scare you silly! Trick or treat? Treat!! Book measures 6.625″ x 9.187″.
Celebrate Halloween with two thrilling tales featuring everyone’s favorite Wall-Crawler and the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes! It can’t get any better than free Spider-Man and Avengers comics, so don’t forget to stop into your local comic shop and pick up a copy!
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
(W) Kevin Eastman, Tom Waltz (A) Dan Duncan (CA) Kevin Eastman
This is a reprint of the first issue from the ongoing series currently being published by IDW! Click on the cover for a preview! -Skott
Publisher: DC COMICS
(W) Dan Slott, Chris Duffy (A) Ty Templeton & Various (CA) Bruce Timm, Scott Gross
  •  Just in time for Halloween, it’s a FREE all-ages flip-book comic reprinting classic BATMAN and SCOOBY-DOO tales!
  • In his side of the comic, The Dark Knight meets Gotham City’s new vigilante, the Cavalier, and battles the evil of Ra’s Al Ghul in stories from BATMAN ADVENTURES #1 and #4.
  • And in the other side, the Mystery Inc. Gang tries to get to the bottom of “The Costume Caper,” in a story from SCOOBY-DOO, WHERE ARE YOU? #2.
And this is just a start! Stay tuned for more books being offered. Check with your LCS and see what sort of events or sales they may be holding including costume contests!
