“Dexter Meets True Blood.”
That’s how Tim Seeley described his new limited series Ex Sanguine to CBR at C2E2 this weekend. Ex Sanguine is a modern, realistic take on the incredibly popular vampire romance genre. If you’re expecting Twilight, turn back now. To be released through Dark Horse Comics, Ex Sanguine will be a far darker take on the idea of a vampire romance then many of its modern contemporaries. Written by Josh Emmons and co-written and illustrated by Tim Seeley (Hack/Slash), the first issue of Ex Sanguine will be released this October, perfect for the Halloween season. Ex Sanguine will run for five issues.
The story follows a small town vampire named Saul Adams as he becomes romantically involved with the only type of person a vampire could realistically relate to, a serial killer. While Saul and Ashley, the serial killer, will be the main characters of the story and the focus of the twisted romance that will exist between them, there are other characters involved in the story. As can be expected in a story focusing on a vampire and serial killer there will be a police presence, investigating a series of murders that may have been committed by either of the main characters. Romance, Horror, Detective story, it seems there is very little this story won’t have.
Seeley went on to talk about the mysticism that surrounds vampires and how he and Emmons had tried to remove the magical aspect from the vampires in their story. Emmons had tried to make the vampire character in this story unique but not absurdly so. Seeley was quoted as saying “They sparkle, or they have translucent skin, or whatever. For ours, we really wanted to do traditional vampire but take out the sort of magic of it” when comparing Ex Sanguine to other modern vampire stories.
While Ex Sanguine won’t be available until this October, you will be able to pick it up in your local comic shop or in our online shop here.
