Marvel released a teaser image today at the FanExpo Canada Convention in Toronto announcing Brian Wood’s return to the company sometime next year. Wood had previously hinted on his website that he would be working with the publisher in 2012.
Though the teaser image released at the convention seems to indicate that Wood will be involved with a Wolverine story, Marvel has yet to officially announce exactly what title he will be working on. This includes such burning questions as whether it will be one of the current books, a miniseries or even a new ongoing.
Wood has recently concluded a five-year exclusive contract with DC, where he was best known for his creator-owned work. Published under DC’s Vertigo imprint, this work included such titles as DMZ, Northlanders (both of which are coming to an end in the near future) and Demo.
DMZ tells the story of Matt Roth, a journalist telling the story of America’s second Civil War, and the island of Manhattan, which becomes the titular Demilitarized Zone between what’s left of the United States and the Free States, who have seized control of territory ranging from the Midwest to New Jersey. It ends with it’s Five Nations of New York story arc, the final issue of which is set to ship in December.
Northlanders, a comic set during the age of Vikings, is set to end with its fiftieth issue, the final chapter of the Icelandic Trilogy arc. Northlanders #50 will reach comic shops in March of next year.
Wood also has an original three-part series, The Massive, which is being published in the Dark Horse Presents anthology. Dark Horse Presents #8 (which includes the first part of The Massive) will be available in January 2012.
In addition to these, Wood’s upcoming projects include Anthem, as well as licensed titles such as Vertigo’s Supernatural comic (based on the hit CW television series of the same name) and a comic based on The War in the North, a Lord of the Rings video game.

I for one, can’t wait for this to happen. I really like Wood’s stuff and think he can bring some unique, thoughtful writing to Marvel.
