We find our team of strong, sexy ladies against the most  mysterious of enemies.  Having faced mind bombs and experienced time gaps, they agree to take 24 hours to rest and regroup. After [REDACTED] in issue #4, the team agrees to take 24 hours to take stock of what just happened. But there’s no such thing as R&R for the Birds of Prey, as Black Canary realizes that Gotham City is still in grave danger. And the key to unmasking the villain known as “Choke” may lie in the mystery of a man who one day just walked out on his family and life…and into a world of mind-control and murder.”

Having had Birds of Prey on my pull list since the reboot, I have followed the series closely. To fully enjoy issue number 5 you really need to have read one through four as well. That being said, I really love not only this issue but where Duane Swierczynski is taking the story. Not just because this is an all ladies team either, which alone earns it high bonus points in my book, but because it’s exciting and keeps you totally absorbed in the storyline.  I really love every bit of it, I love that the team members are diverse and as Black Canary puts it, none of them have “squeaky-clean souls.”  They are all unique enough to bring character to the team, but united enough to feel like a team. The roster consisting of; Black Canary, a martial artists with a sonic scream that can shatter pretty much anything. Katana, a bit on the not so sane side samurai who kills with a mystical sword. Poison Ivy, an eco-terrorist who controls plants and may not be so trustworthy. Starling, a spy who knows a thousand different ways to kill you and will look sexy while doing so. My personal favorite is Black Canary, who takes leadership of this misfit team. In this issue you get a glimpse at her sorrow for feeling alone and lost in her outlaw life , but still manages to stay strong and focused on figuring out the mysteries behind the enemy they face.

Just as intriguing as the team of ladies is, so is the enemy that threatens to destroy Gotham.  Duane Swiercxynski  does a great job of keeping you on your toes and guessing what the one who calls himself Choke has planned. It takes you on a mind bending ride that leaves you saying “what just happened? I need to know more!” Along with the mysteries behind the one named Choke, we are alluded to a new enemy the team may have in their midst. Yet again its left so open-ended you’re never  really sure who is the enemy and who is just an illusion. We are left with yet another twist to the story when Black Canary finds out new information that could change who the team is fighting entirely. Overall I highly recommend this as a must read. The only set back would be to fully enjoy reading issue number 5, you need to read issues one through four as well. But really whose complaining with this awesome storyline and action packed panels with beautifully drawn woman by Jesus Saiz.
