Batgirl to Appear in Birds of Prey #4

Comic Booked 09/15/2011 Reviews

Fans of DC’s new Birds of Prey series will get an early Christmas present this year.  Barbara Gordon, aka Batgirl will be making a surprise guest appearance in December’s Birds of Prey #4.  The issue, written by Duane Swierczynski promises to be an explosive issue that will “rewrite the rules” of the status quo.

As the first issue of the series has yet to hit the stands, Swierczynski was even less forthcoming with the details of this shakeup than one might normally expect. All I can say is that there’s nothing like keeping the readers guessing. Indeed, we have little to go on beyond the following quote:

“One of my favorite thrillers Ira Levin‘s A Kiss Before Dying, because right in the middle of the novel… well, the cliché phrase would be, ‘Levin pulls the rug right out from under you,’ but that doesn’t do his legendary plot twist justice,” said Swierczynski. “Forget the rug being pulled out from under you… when you reach that point in Kiss, it’s as if someone’s rolled up that rug and proceeded to use it to beat the living crap out of you. That’s what I’m shooting for with this first arc of Birds of Prey. I won’t tell you where it is (other than somewhere in issue #4). But If I’m doing my job, you’ll be relaxing, enjoying your comic, and then…”

Barbara Gordon led the Birds of Prey team as the wheelchair-bound, tech genius Oracle in almost every incarnation, but with DC’s reboot, she has regained the use of her legs and reclaimed the role of Batgirl, an identity most recently held by Stephanie Brown.

This will mark her first appearance in this new Birds of Prey series.  Perhaps this issue will explain what happened between this series and Batgirl #1 and how she was able to recover from her paralysis.
