Alternate Reality Comics started in 1995 when , Ralph Mathieu, bought Dungeon Comics (established in 1987). He has read comics since 1975 and always wanted to do something within the comic book industry. So when this opportunity to own a comic store came up, he didn’t have to think twice about whether this was something that he should do.
He got seriously addicted to comic books in 1975, when, while reading titles such as House Of Mystery and House of Secrets, his eyes were drawn to the ads for DC’s superhero titles. So it was off to the local 7-11, where he picked up an issue of Flash and started picking up all of DC’s titles, followed shortly thereafter by getting whichever Marvel Comics he would see at the store, as well as Warren comic magazines such as Creepy, Eerie, 1984, etc.
Owning Alternate Reality Comics has been a delight from the first day, because he gets to share his love of comics with people just about every day and turn them on to the myriad of wonderful new fantastic comics, manga, and graphic novels that this medium has to offer. Additionally he met his wonderful wife, Katherine (Kate), at the store and she shares his passion for this medium.
This is Katherine. She discovered comics in the early 1990s while working at a small chain bookstore which had a couple of spinner racks. They weren’t allowed to read books while on duty, but comics were fine. She picked up Spiderman 2099 and Morbius: The Living Vampire and thought they were way better than about 90% of TV at the time. She has been reading comics ever since.
How delighted she was when she came to Las Vegas to go to school and discovered a nice comic book store right across the street from UNLV!
Through the store, she met Ralph. In 1997, she married him for entertainment value — and is never bored.
In 1998, Katherine helped found Sequential Tart, a webzine by women who love comics.
OUTSTANDING HUH?! That is just a little about the store and a short bio of these wonderful people. When in VEGAS, this is a must stop to see what their store has to offer. You won’t regret it. You have my word on it.
Keep your eyes where they should be…in a comic! –take care friends! Smiles, Brieanna Brock

I'm glad to see that there are still (and always) very viable alternatives in the comics world apart from the big three…or so.
Thanks, Brieanna! I started laughing as I read your post here, that I'm (my store) hosting an AA event because the first thing that came to mind when I see those two letters is Alcoholic Anonymous (and wouldn't that be an interesting in store event!?), but maybe some of the Arizona Artists are fans of alcohol also (haha!)!? Speaking of fun with alcohol, remember that couple that came into my store as you were leaving and I was getting ready to close? Well they turned out to be cool comic fans from New York City who got stranded here in Vegas for a couple more days because of the weather back East and they were just having a good time. Thanks again for the great write up here, Brieanna and have a great rest of the week! – Ralph
